Charleston County Wind, Hurricane & Severe Storm History (2010–2025 NOAA Data)

Year-by-year severe thunderstorm wind, non-convective high wind, hail, tornado and tropical cyclone statistics for Charleston County, SC from NOAA's Storm Events Database (2010–2025).

16-year Charleston County severe wind and storm summary (2010–2025)

Between January 2010 and December 2025, NOAA's National Centers for Environmental Information (NCEI) Storm Events Database recorded 570 severe wind, hail, tornado, and tropical-system reports across Charleston County — comprising 344 thunderstorm-wind reports on 127 distinct days (an average of 21.5 thunderstorm-wind reports per year, with 96 entries documenting property damage and 31 recording gusts of 58 knots / 67 mph or higher), 76 strong and high non-thunderstorm wind reports across 42 days (43 logging property damage), 106 hail reports across 39 days (including 16 reports of golf-ball 1.75-inch to baseball 2.75-inch hail), 23 tornado segments across 12 days (12 EF0, 10 EF1, and 1 EF2), and 67 tropical storm or depression zone entries across 21 distinct calendar days.

Beyond wind and hail, Charleston County also logged 247 coastal flood reports across 74 days and 17 storm surge/tide events across 8 days during the same 2010–2025 window — explaining why ground-level and drive-under garage doors in Charleston face both positive/negative wind pressure and brackish floodwater exposure.

Notable Charleston microbursts, tornadoes, winter windstorms, and hurricanes

Straight-line thunderstorm microbursts and non-tropical coastal low-pressure systems frequently generate wind gusts in Charleston County that rival tropical storms: on April 19, 2019, an anemometer in Charleston measured an 81 mph (70-knot) thunderstorm wind gust while strong winds blew over a tractor-trailer on the Don Holt Bridge; on April 13, 2020, an NWS storm survey confirmed a 90 mph (78-knot) downburst near Rockville on Wadmalaw Island; on April 5, 2022, an NWS survey confirmed a 95 mph (83-knot) microburst in Rantowles alongside 80 mph (70-knot) wind damage in Morris Acres; on January 9, 2024, a powerful non-tropical winter windstorm produced a 69 mph (60-knot) measured gust at Charleston International Airport (KCHS); and on June 10, 2024, an NWS survey documented an 85 mph (74-knot) straight-line wind event near Lincolnville.

Tropical cyclones and tropical-cyclone tornado outbreaks have impacted Charleston County in 12 of the 16 years between 2010 and 2025: NCEI records tropical-storm or hurricane wind impacts during Hurricane Irene (August 2011), Tropical Storm Beryl and Hurricane Sandy (2012), Tropical Storm Andrea (June 2013), Tropical Storm Ana (May 2015, followed by a 6.85-mile EF2 tornado on Johns Island on September 24, 2015), Hurricane Hermine and Hurricane Matthew (September and October 2016), Hurricane Irma (September 11, 2017, which spawned 4 confirmed tornadoes across Joint Base Charleston, James Island, Mount Pleasant, and Johns Island), Hurricanes Florence and Michael (2018), Hurricane Dorian (September 2019), Hurricane Isaias (August 2020), Tropical Storms Danny and Elsa (2021), Hurricane Ian (September 2022), Hurricane Idalia (August 2023), and Hurricane Debby and Hurricane Helene (August and September 2024).
